TEA LABEL STOCKS AND LAMINATES: INFO, OPTIONS, SUGGESTIONS
Choose from a variety of our standard pressure-sensitive and self-adhesive paper (coated and uncoated), plastic film (white BOPP), clear PVC, foil (PET and metalized paper options), and kraft label stocks for your unique requirements. When choosing your label stock it’s important to consider the regular use and environment of your tea products.
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR STOCKS FOR TEA LABELS?
White paper stock is our most popular tea label option since it is the least expensive material that possesses the strength and durability needed for simple tea bag and tea box applications. White is a common choice because it develops more accurate colors of label designs as it is essentially a plain background.
Brown kraft paper stock is also a common choice, especially for our customers who have brown kraft tea bags and tea boxes—this helps the label go on seamlessly and blends right onto the packaging. With any label stock that isn’t white, keep in mind that colors will appear darker and label artwork will have less contrast. We suggest getting a hard proof to check if the undertones of your brown kraft tea packaging match with our brown kraft stock as some browns are more red or yellow than others.
Foil stock, specifically our silver metalized paper, is also a favorite. This offsets tea tin containers nicely, compliments and “continues” the metallic finish of the container to give an overall look that is put together and markedly custom.
Going for uncoated paper labels may look best with your tea packaging; however we recommend adding a laminate to increase durability. Choose matte laminate for a low-shine finish to mimic the flat finish of uncoated paper. Paper labels without an added laminate will start to deteriorate when in contact with liquid and will fade more easily.
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE TYPE OF LAMINATE FOR MY TEA LABELS?
A laminate is a clear, protective coating that also changes the final finish of your tea labels. Once applied, it creates a smoother label texture, and protects the print from wear-and-tear protection for your labels against rubbing or scuffing.
CHOOSE MATTE LAMINATE – For a flat, low-shine label finish, with printed colors that are soft and muted. Generally, colors are duller with less contrast. Matte coating is forgiving with low resolution prints and provides for a refined appearance.
CHOOSE GLOSS LAMINATE – Gloss makes your labels extremely smooth and allows them to reflect a lot of light, for high shine. This reproduces vibrant color and delivers sharper detail due to higher contrast (shadows are darker and highlights are brighter). This is great for labels with photos for a more commercial look. Gloss also provides more protection against ink scuffing compared to matte laminate, especially with paper labels.
CHOOSE HOLOGRAPHIC GLOSS – Same as gloss laminate, but with the addition of a transparent color gradient that is only apparent once the surface catches light at different angles. The transparent rainbow effect transforms old label artwork into a more eye-catching piece. This kind of laminate doesn’t suit all label designs and concepts. We suggest getting a label sample to check if this will enhance your existing tea label artwork.
ONE PERFECT LABEL FOR EACH PERFECT BREW: PRINTING MULTIPLE DESIGNS FOR YOUR TEA VARIETIES
Rarely do we see customers print just one type of tea label. Label artwork sometimes dramatically changes from one tea product to the other, and oftentimes color is used to distinguish and group tea varieties for ease of identification. With our digital presses, we combine multiple versions of your tea label artwork into a single run if they are the same size and shape, allowing you to print all the tea labels you need, while saving you a significant chunk of your budget.
100% CUSTOM TEA LABELS, THE WAY YOU WANT IT
We offer Digital, Offset, and Silkscreen printing, and can accomplish specific print instructions if your tea labels require more elaborate finishing touches, such as hot and cold foiling, embossing, debossing, and Spot UV.
CUSTOM LABELS WITH FOIL STAMPING (METALLIC EFFECT ON ANY STOCK)
Add more depth, polished detail, and lustrous elegance to your custom tea labels with foil stamping. This special process uses pressure to transfer metallic foil onto the surface of your paper label stock.
Choose to highlight specific parts of your label artwork, or foil the entire label to get an overall metallic sheen for a high end look. Just make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be foiled cleanly.
NOTE: Foil stamping is different from our foil labels. Foil stamping does not utilize metallic-looking inks, rather it uses an extremely thin foil sheet and printing plates to create the metallic imprints.
To be able to achieve this, talk to your designer and specify that a new artboard needs to be created. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where foiling should be done, with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black color). Label this artboard “Foil”. If you need help setting this up, CONTACT US and we’ll help you get started.
CUSTOM LABELS WITH EMBOSSING (RAISED EFFECT ON ANY LABEL STOCK)
Add custom decorative touches for a two-dimensional, premium custom label. A metal die and high pressure are used to create impressions on your label, for depth, texture, and tactile beauty.
For a more involved creative concept, embossing as a final touch increases a custom label’s visual premium for prime labels that outshine competition.
Use embossing for crisp lettering or prominent logos to highlight important visual elements. Just make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be embossed cleanly.
NOTE: Embossing can be done WITHOUT INK—this is called “Blind Embossing”. This is most commonly done when creating a textured look to the whole label, such as applying patterns and camouflaged borders.
To be able to achieve this, talk to your designer and specify that a new artboard needs to be created. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where embossed effect would be, with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black color). Label this artboard “Emboss”. MAKE TEA MOMENTS MEMORABLE
QUICK EXPERT TIPS FOR YOUR TEA LABELS
YOUR LABELS TELL YOUR TEA STORY—TEST THE MARKET FIRST. While a diecut label fitting into the grooves of your tea tin container definitely gives a premium look, if your container is straightforward (such as a tea box, with a flat surface all throughout) standard shapes such as circles and squares are also elegant in their simplicity, with the right artwork and execution. Cut down cost first; gold or silver foil and embossing can come later once you’re sure that your customers know you and your brand has been established. When you are sure your labels are the perfect size and shape, you can add special finishing touches in the next press run. A simple addition of another artboard to specify design elements that need to be highlighted can revitalize your new labels going forward.
MAKE YOUR TEA LABELS LAST LONGER. If you choose uncoated paper, remember that they do not have any protective laminate or coating on them, which means that they are neither waterproof nor moisture-proof. This lends to a shorter life span in terms of ink rubbing off and labels getting damaged with moisture. If you choose uncoated paper for your label material, remember that these labels fade more quickly because they are not reinforced by coating or laminate. If you’d like to keep that uncoated paper finish, apply matte laminate to give it some protection against wear and tear; however shiny gloss laminate will do a better job at this. Remember to store your reserve tea labels in a place that is cool and dry, not exposed to sunlight, to keep the labels looking vibrant and in top condition.
GETTING THE RIGHT SIZE IS CRITICAL, ESPECIALLY IF YOUR LABELS FEATURE BEAUTIFUL POSED PHOTOS OF YOUR LOOSE TEAS. Featuring product shots or the process and story of tea-to-bag means that you will need to maximize real estate. Get the optimum size by correctly measuring your labels for high shelf appeal.
POSITION YOUR TEA BRAND CORRECTLY AND MAKE YOUR LABELS REFLECT THIS TO MARKET YOUR TEAS EFFECTIVELY: If you’re on a mission to create exceptional tea labels (especially if you’re looking to establish your brand as “vintage” or “elegant”), always consider additional finishing touches—this makes all the difference in transforming the final look and feel of your labels. Label Special FX such as foil stamping and embossing transforms even the most simple tea label into a high-end showstopper.
GET “METALLIC” LABELS TO SUIT YOUR TEA TIN CONTAINERS WHILE KEEPING COST LOW: Printing foil labels, using foil substrate, is a more cost-effective alternative to doing foil stamping (which is more expensive due to setup costs). You can opt for custom foil labels with White Ink Underprinting if you are on a budget, but want to keep that high quality appeal—foil labels will support an look of grandeur, distinction, and, style for your tea tin packaging.
MAKE A SEAMLESS TRANSITION WITH KRAFT LABELS: Perfect for kraft tea boxes or tea bags, using kraft labels will certainly help with creating a seamless impression. One big thing to keep in mind: As the stock is not white, colors will print darker due to the brown paper base color. Your artwork previously printed on white stock will translate differently on this stock, and there is less contrast unless you adjust your color values. Especially if it is your first press run, we suggest that you test colors first by doing a HARD PROOF to see if the colors turn out accurately with the new brown stock.
