WHAT ARE MY CUSTOM WATERPROOF LABEL OPTIONS?
Long lasting and durable materials and state-of-the-art press options lend water resistance and superior tack to deliver waterproof labels for any application. We work hard so that even with immersion in water, constant handling, and even with a good scrub, your labels won’t slide around or wrinkle and inks won’t bleed, smear, or run. Best label performance is key in keeping your waterproof labels from slipping off of your containers and having the prints look as stunning as they did right after they were freshly applied.
Our recommended water-resistant base materials below are built to last and will hold firm in the most humid conditions, freezing temperatures, and wet environments. When applied correctly on a dry and clean surface, they are guaranteed to be durable and stunning custom labels that finish off your beautiful packaging.
White plastic film stock (BOPP) is our recommended material for most waterproof label applications. It is flexible and goes on smoothly on properly cleaned surfaces, suited for rigid containers as well as squeezable bottles and tubes. Primed for underwater toughness, these are extremely durable with high opacity and shine, developing vibrant prints, with great contrast. This stock is tear-proof and impervious to water and oil. This is especially valuable for curved surfaces/rounded bottles for excellent tack. Add laminate to give your waterproof labels more protection and to develop the glossy or satin finish of your preference.
Plain white BOPP plastic film labels are already equipped with *freezer adhesive.
Pearlescent milky white BOPP plastic film labels come with our standard adhesive. Please specify if you would like to have freezer adhesive backing for this option.
*With the addition of our stronger adhesive this will guarantee that your labels stay perfectly positioned on their containers for longer even in fluctuating temperatures. We recommend getting a sample or printing a hard proof to test your labels if you would like to try them out before committing to the final press run.
Clear plastic film stock (PVC) holds up extremely well on the shelf, in the fridge, or in the shower. This is a versatile and stylish choice because this makes your waterproof labels “disappear” on your containers for that “no label look” or printed-right-on-the-bottle look. This is great if you’d rather not color-match labels to your opaque containers. This also works in synergy with transparent waterproof containers, especially if you’d like to showcase the color, texture, translucency/clarity of your product.
This label stock is also a cheaper option compared to diecut labels (cookie cutter shape labels) since you would simply need to print white and colored ink on areas that need to stand out—the clear, unprinted label material will blend onto the container, taking after the color of its background, leaving you with any custom shape of whatever has been printed.
If your container is an opaque white, you won’t need to do white ink underprinting as your container will develop your prints as opaque. For transparent containers however, please consider doing white ink underprinting so that your prints won’t take on a watermarked look due to lack of ink opacity because of the clear label material. Feel free to contact us for a free consultation if you need help setting up your artwork for this.
Foil silver stock (Silver PET base) and Holographic silver stock (PET base), are distinct and eye-catching showstoppers, especially if your waterproof labels call for a more stylish brand concept. Both label stocks come with either gloss or matte laminate to further protect your custom waterproof labels against oil and ink scuffing. These support saturated colors well for a commercial looking waterproof label to intensify your packaging appeal and aesthetic.
NOTE: With these two stocks, it is important to do a white ink wash, or what is referred to as white ink underprinting to make sure your prints don’t take on the appearance of its base material, which is silver. Printing vibrant colors will not cancel out the silver base; only white ink underprinting will ensure that all ink colors from your label artwork develop as planned, while keeping the brilliant finish of foil.
The holographic silver option has a signature rainbow sheen that is conspicuous enough to capture customers’ fancy and can work well with creative concepts to give your waterproof products more shelf appeal.
The foil silver stock can be worked around as a cheaper alternative to hot or cold foil stamping, if you are after metallic-looking prints.
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE TYPE OF LAMINATE FOR MY WATERPROOF LABELS?
A laminate is a clear, protective coating that also changes the final finish (glossy or matte) of your waterproof labels. Once applied, it creates a smoother label texture and protects the print from wear-and-tear against rubbing or scuffing. With waterproof labels, laminates not only enhance appearance but more importantly are valuable allies—this added layer of protection helps keep your custom waterproof labels last longer.
CHOOSE MATTE LAMINATE – For a flat, satin label finish, with printed colors that are soft and muted. Generally, colors are duller with less contrast. Matte coating is forgiving with low resolution prints and provides for a refined appearance. If you need to write on your labels to finish them off before distribution, this is our recommended option.
CHOOSE GLOSS LAMINATE – Gloss makes your labels extremely smooth and allows them to reflect a lot of light, for high shine. This reproduces vibrant color and delivers sharper detail due to higher contrast (shadows are darker and highlights are brighter). This is great for labels with vibrant color palettes, for a more commercial look. Gloss also provides more protection against ink scuffing compared to matte laminate.
CHOOSE HOLOGRAPHIC GLOSS – Same as gloss laminate, but with the addition of a transparent color gradient that is only apparent once the surface catches light at different angles. The transparent rainbow effect transforms old label artwork into a more stunning branding piece. This kind of laminate doesn’t suit all label designs and concepts. We suggest getting a label sample to check if this will enhance your existing waterproof label artwork.
