Sometimes referred to as “tooling” or “cameo” embossing is a heat stamping process that involves pressing a shape or image into the label material using color dies. Applied to part (spot embossing) or all (pattern embossing) of a label material, the results are beautiful raised impressions that feature texture and depth.

VERSUS ARTWORK VERSIONING. Add custom decorative touches for a two-dimensional, premium custom label. Want to refresh your offerings and uplift your brand image? Create impressions that last by taking old artwork and selecting art elements where depth, texture, and tactile beauty should be applied for maximum impact. This can be your logo or your product name, or can even simply be a pattern that frames or acts as a textured background. For a more involved creative concept, embossing as a final touch increases a custom label’s visual premium for prime labels that stand out versus competition.
 

AVOID COATED AND LAMINATED STOCK. Laminates and coatings are added as a final layer not only to change the final finish of custom labels but also to add some protection against ink scuffing, moisture, and oils. Uncoated labels, especially paper labels, are more sensitive to changes in humidity and wear-and-tear since the base material is porous, which also means that it will wick up water and absorb oils on contact. It is important to note however with embossed labels, this added layer makes the embossed areas less noticeable. Unsure about how your stock and laminate choice will affect your design? To check for label performance, it’s always best to do a hard proof first before committing to the whole press run. You can do similar proofs on different label material and finishes and proceed with torture tests before deciding on your final label spec. CHECK THE THICKNESS OF YOUR LINE ART. Use embossing for crisp lettering or prominent logos to highlight important visual elements. However, as with any machine, there is a certain tolerance when it comes to creating strong and prominent embossed designs. Always make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be embossed cleanly. If your existing design has extremely thin lines, shoot us an email and we’ll help revise your label design for free.

IMPORTANT ARTWORK TIPS

Please save your custom embossed label artwork as layered .PDF files so that our Prepress Team can properly check and report any issues to you. We can certainly work with .TIFF, .EPS, .PSD, and .AI files as well, but kindly make sure that you go through our FILE PREPARATION CHECKLIST below:
 

  • Proofread everything for typos and grammatical errors. To keep the integrity of your files, we do not check text.
  • Set all your images, objects, and the file’s color mode to CMYK for digital printing.
  • Add a 3mm bleed to all sides.
  • All raster images recommended 350dpi
  • Minimum line thickness .57pt or 0.2mm
     
    Minimum font size for embossing and foil stamping: Sizing isn’t standard and will depend on the font you are using. However, for crisp and clean results, we suggest a minimum of 4pt. Smaller font sizes may be possible, but this will be subject to review by our Prepress Team.
  • We print embossed labels to any size. Please double check artwork dimensions before sending to save on proofing time.
  • Do not include printer’s crop marks or registration marks in your PDF export.
  • Outline all fonts.
  • If you use a bleed, make sure your file has the correct bleed settings.

 

HOW TO SUBMIT ARTWORK FOR EMBOSSING: Specify the art elements that need to be embossed by using a new artboard separate from the full print design of your custom embossed labels. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where embossed/raised effect would be with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black color). Label this artboard “Emboss”.
