However, label material is critical for performance while the product is in use, as well as for the sake of building your brand image and identity. Certainly we recommend a custom hot sauce label that looks great. White paper stock is our cost-efficient hot sauce label option since it is the least expensive material that possesses both strength and durability needed for simple hot sauce packaging applications. If choosing this option for hot sauce bottles and jars, we strongly advise adding a laminate to make the labels hardy against moisture and frequent handling.
This label stock isn’t going to work well with hot sauce tubes, or any containers that are squeezable, since the repeated compression and decompression will wear away your label, making the paper base crumbly as it deteriorates with use.
 

White plastic film stock is the perfect material for any hot sauce label application. It is flexible, suited for rigid hot sauce bottles and jars as well as squeezable hot sauce tubes. Our plastic film stock is your no-fail option as it is both striking and highly functional. Extremely durable, these self-adhesive labels come in a beautiful pearlescent milky white with high opacity and shine, developing vibrant prints, with high contrast. This stock is tear-proof and impervious to water and oil, making it a sound choice for hot sauce labels. If you’re at a loss for what to choose, this elegant stock is a hardworking option to consider—this holds up extremely well on both shelf and fridge.
 

Clear plastic film (PVC) stock is also a popular, versatile and stylish choice, especially if you particularly want to show off the texture and color of your hot sauce. Clear hot sauce labels will give you that “no label look” or printed-right-on-the-bottle look which works in synergy with transparent containers, especially if the contents are of visually-stimulating colors. This label stock is also a cheaper option compared to diecut labels (cookie cutter shape labels) since you would simply need to print white and colored ink on areas that need to be conspicuous—the clear, unprinted label material will “disappear”, taking after the color of its background, leaving you with any custom shape of whatever has been printed.
 

Holographic silver stock, which is a plastic (PET) base, is also a big favorite. This option will make your custom hot sauce labels look markedly custom, with its signature rainbow sheen that is conspicuous enough to capture your customers’ fancy and can work well with creative concepts to fully showcase your unique recipes. Use rich colors for an in-your-face hot sauce label to intensify your packaging appeal and aesthetic. This label material comes with gloss laminate to further protect your custom hot sauce labels against ink scuffing and fading.
 

Your special hot sauce recipe needs custom labels that can take the heat and look good at the same time. Going for paper labels may look best with your packaging; however we recommend adding a laminate to increase durability. Choose matte laminate for a low-shine finish to mimic the flat finish of uncoated paper, or high gloss for more vibrant prints. Paper labels without an added laminate will start to deteriorate when in contact with liquid and oil and will fade more easily.
 
 

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE TYPE OF LAMINATE FOR MY HOT SAUCE LABELS?

 A laminate is a clear, protective coating that also changes the final finish of your hot sauce labels. Once applied, it creates a smoother label texture, and protects the print from wear-and-tear protection for your labels against rubbing or scuffing.

CHOOSE MATTE LAMINATE – For a flat, low-shine label finish, with printed colors that are soft and muted. Generally, colors are duller with less contrast. Matte coating is forgiving with low resolution prints and provides for a refined appearance.

 

CHOOSE GLOSS LAMINATE – Gloss makes your labels extremely smooth and allows them to reflect a lot of light, for high shine. This reproduces vibrant color and delivers sharper detail due to higher contrast (shadows are darker and highlights are brighter). This is great for labels with photos of posed peppers, or for pop art hot sauce logos for a more commercial look. Gloss also provides more protection against ink scuffing compared to matte laminate, especially with paper labels.

 

CHOOSE HOLOGRAPHIC GLOSS – Same as gloss laminate, but with the addition of a transparent color gradient that is only apparent once the surface catches light at different angles. The transparent rainbow effect transforms old hot sauce label artwork into a more eye-catching piece. This kind of laminate doesn’t suit all label designs and concepts. We suggest getting a label sample to check if this will enhance your existing hot sauce label artwork.

CUSTOM LABELS WITH FOIL STAMPING (METALLIC EFFECT ON ANY STOCK)

Add more depth, polished detail, and lustrous elegance to your custom hot sauce labels with foil stamping. This special process uses pressure to transfer metallic foil onto the surface of your paper label stock.
 

Choose to highlight specific parts of your label artwork, or foil the entire label to get an overall metallic sheen for a high end look. Just make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be foiled cleanly.
 

NOTE: Foil stamping is different from our foil labels. Foil stamping does not utilize metallic-looking inks, rather it uses an extremely thin foil sheet and printing plates to create the metallic imprints.
 

To be able to achieve this, talk to your designer and specify that a new artboard needs to be created. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where foiling should be done, with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black color). Label this artboard “Foil”. CUSTOM LABELS WITH WHITE INK PRINTING (OPAQUE EFFECT USING CLEAR LABEL STOCK)

Unlike opaque base label materials such as paper, clear labels are transparent because its base is PVC plastic—this really presents some print considerations if you are using this label material for the first time. If you have been printing paper labels or foil labels, some adjustment with your artwork must be done to ensure you get the correct prints with your new custom clear labels.
 

If you are printing on transparent labels, you are probably looking to achieve a “no label” look, with the areas without any printing “disappearing” into the surface where you would apply the clear labels.
 

Printing as is on a transparent base will result to lighter, less saturated prints. Make use of this versatile label material and add flexibility to your custom clear labels by using white ink to increase its range of applications while enhancing image quality.
 

To remedy light prints, white ink can be used in two ways:

 

  • HIGHLIGHTS/SELECTIVELY USING WHITE INK PRINTING: Place a layer of white ink underneath specific art elements to increase brightness for certain text or images;
  • FLOOD/WHITE INK PRINTING UNDERNEATH THE WHOLE ARTWORK: Best for images and graphics that are solid pieces (no clear spaces in between), place a white flood underneath the whole area to be printed. This is to simulate the opaque white substrate for more vibrant colors.

 
To be able to achieve this, talk to your designer and specify that a new artboard needs to be created. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where white ink should be (under)printed, with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black color). Label this artboard “White Ink”. CUSTOM LABELS WITH EMBOSSING (RAISED EFFECT ON ANY LABEL STOCK)

Add custom decorative touches for a two-dimensional, premium custom label. A metal die and high pressure are used to create impressions on your label, for depth, texture, and tactile beauty.
 

For a more involved creative concept, embossing as a final touch increases a custom label’s visual premium for prime labels that outshine competition.
 

Use embossing for crisp lettering or prominent logos to highlight important visual elements. Just make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be embossed cleanly.
 

NOTE: Embossing can be done WITHOUT INK—this is called “Blind Embossing”. This is most commonly done when creating a textured look to the whole label, such as applying patterns and camouflaged borders.
 

To be able to achieve this, talk to your designer and specify that a new artboard needs to be created. A single wraparound label can be your simplest option, but separate front and back labels do have their advantages. A single label works great if you have a labeling machine for quicker application. Separate labels are advantageous if you keep branding and graphics on the front label and consumer information on the back label—if your tea formulation changes or if you need to update product information for seasonal promotions, you would only need to modify the back label instead of rearranging the whole layout.


 

CAN YOUR LABELS TAKE THE HEAT?

Consider the regular use of your product over time—enjoying hot sauce can get wonderfully messy...

All of that hot goodness can (and does) get everywhere, including on the label. Sauce contains oil and acidic ingredients that drip down on your label, creating problems with adhesion and label integrity. You don’t want a label that prematurely deteriorates; this reflects largely on your brand identity with customers. Paper hot sauce labels will definitely have a shorter life span in terms of ink rubbing off and labels getting damaged with moisture. Labels with a plastic base material will do a better job at this. Also remember to store your unused hot sauce labels in a place that is cool and dry, not exposed to sunlight, to keep them looking hot and in top condition.


 

EASY APPLICATION ON HOT SAUCE BOTTLES/CURVED SURFACES

First, get the optimum size by correctly measuring your containers...

Make your labels slightly shorter—this saves you a ton of time if you don’t have a label applicator! A problem that is often encountered with hot sauce wraparound labels is the issue of labels not lining up properly when manually applied on the bottles. This takes up too much time and wastes precious labels. A trick to get around this is to measure the circumference of your hot sauce bottle and deduct at least an eighth of an inch from the total width. This gap gives you leeway when manually applying your labels, and you won’t need to worry about applying them perfectly to get a professional look.


 

DRAMATICALLY CHANGE THE OVERALL AESTHETIC OF HOT SAUCE PACKAGING

Clear hot sauce bottles mean color of contents will show through.

If you’re designing for labels against a vividly-colored background, consider how the colors on your artwork would look like once they are on your containers. Think about synergy. No matter how great you think your label artwork is, if they don’t work to complement and enhance the overall look, then you aren’t maximizing the impact they could have on your website, and on the shelves. Choosing clear over opaque label material gives you a lot of flexibility—just always remember to print white ink under colored areas to make these show up well on the label. If you don’t choose to do white ink underprinting, your labels will have that washed out (watermark) effect.

Please save your custom hot sauce label artwork as layered .PDF files so that our Prepress Team can properly check and report any issues to you. We can certainly work with .TIFF, .EPS, .PSD, and .AI files as well, but kindly make sure that you go through our FILE PREPARATION CHECKLIST below:

 

  • Proofread everything for typos and grammatical errors. To keep the integrity of your files, we do not check text.
  • Set all your images, objects, and the file’s color mode to CMYK for digital printing.
  • Add a 3mm bleed to all sides.
  • All raster images recommended 350dpi
  • Minimum line thickness .57pt or 0.2mm
  • We print hot sauce labels to any size. Please double check artwork dimensions before sending to save on proofing time.
  • Do not include printer’s crop marks or registration marks in your PDF export.
  • Outline all fonts.
  • If you use a bleed, make sure your file has the correct bleed settings.
