Spot UV can only be applied over a smooth matte laminate. The highly reflective Spot UV varnish and the satin, light absorbing matte background deliver maximum contrast and create an apparent and striking aesthetic effect. Glossing over areas can be done on either the whole background, leaving some areas out, or only on specific areas of interest.

The Spot UV effect’s appeal is in its subtlety and elegance. But if you are looking to do a more extravagant effect that will truly give that extra flair, try doing Spot UV with Embossing. Not only will your selected Spot UV areas gleam in the light, they will also be more pronounced as embossing will create a two-dimensional effect. The glossed over areas will have a raised detail and will be very apparent, adding a unique and premium visual and tactile character to your labels.

Spot UV, especially if done with blind embossing, immediately transforms your labels into a bespoke, premium branding investment that enhances your brand image to your customers.

Spot UV cannot be done on textured stock and over gloss laminate. Label stock with raised patterns are not recommended for lamination and Spot UV since the final result will not look as smooth and crisp due to the stock’s uneven surface. Spot UV will only apparent if the other areas are matte.

Here are some quick expert tips for your custom Spot UV labels:

RAMP UP AESTHETIC VALUE:

Spot UV is a specialty finish, a clear varish that is applied to specific areas of your label. To make sure the effect is eye-catching and interesting, plan your designs accordingly.

While keeping Spot UV contained in areas where there is print underneath will certainly make that print pop out, consider going big! Try placing a pattern throughout the label to achieve the effect of faux texture made possible by the contrast in light. Darker colored backgrounds enhance the Spot UV effect, and a high ratio of UV versus laminate will create the greatest impact in most layouts.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR SPOT UV:

Spot UV requires technical knowledge as setting up artwork is more complex that the standard artwork.

It is recommended to have an experienced designer prepare the files for you. Spot UV is a liquid varnish that goes on top of your printed labels. As it is a coating and is not really a printed element, it is not as crisp and can’t go down in scale as much as CMYK prints.

BLIND SPOT UV:

Spot UV layers with text that do not have any CMYK print registered to it are called Blind Spot UV Text.

Keep in mind that to be able to decipher the writing with only Spot UV, your audience would need to catch the light. Text content may not be readable or legible at all angles. While it may seem mysterious and stylish, never do this with important details such as contact numbers and website information. Talk to your designer to experiment with more interesting effects.

CHECK FINE TEXT AND DETAIL:

As with any machine, there is a certain tolerance when it comes to creating strong and even Spot UV designs...

Spot UV varnishing is another step in the production process, and with any elements (lines, text) thinner than 0.25pt, it can be slightly offset with the printed elements. If your existing design has extremely thin lines, shoot us an email and we’ll help revise your label design for free.

IMPORTANT ARTWORK TIPS

Please save your custom Spot UV label artwork as layered .PDF files so that our Prepress Team can properly check and report any issues to you. We can certainly work with .TIFF, .EPS, .PSD, and .AI files as well, but kindly make sure that you go through our FILE PREPARATION CHECKLIST below:

Proofread everything for typos and grammatical errors. To keep the integrity of your files, we do not check text.
Set all your images, objects, and the file’s color mode to CMYK for digital printing.
Add a 3mm bleed to all sides.
All raster images recommended 350dpi
Minimum line thickness .57pt or 0.2mm
We print Spot UV labels to any size. Please double check artwork dimensions before sending to save on proofing time.
Do not include printer’s crop marks or registration marks in your PDF export.
Outline all fonts.
If you use a bleed, make sure your file has the correct bleed settings.

HOW TO SUBMIT ARTWORK FOR SPOT UV:

Specify the art elements that need to be varnished with Spot UV by using a new artboard separate from the full print design of your custom Spot UV labels. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where the varnish would be applied with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black color). Label this artboard “Spot UV”.
