RECOMMENDED STOCKS FOR LIP BALM LABELS

Lip balm, lip gloss, lip treatment, lip salve, lip polish, lip butter, lip whip, or lip primer products can come in many unique and interesting packaging. While the most popular would be in tubes and pots, we’ve had customers who look to more novel presentations that require different label materials for individual labeling requirements or matching label sets to complement their product lines. With lip balm labels, a particular concern is that these are going to face moisture, constant handling, and friction, which means label performance is key in both keeping the labels from slipping off of your containers and having the prints look as beautiful as they did right after they were freshly applied.
 

White plastic film stock is our recommended material for most lip balm label applications. It is thin and flexible, and with the addition of our stronger adhesive this will guarantee that your labels stay perfectly positioned on their containers for longer. This is especially valuable for tubes and curved surfaces. Extremely durable, these self-adhesive labels come in a beautiful pearlescent milky white with high opacity and shine, developing vibrant prints, with high contrast. This stock is tear-proof and impervious to water and oil. Add laminate to give prints more resistance to ink scuffing while lip balms are subjected to friction inside bags and constant handling.
 

Clear plastic film (PVC) stock holds up extremely well on both shelf and while in use. This is a popular, versatile and stylish choice for cosmetics, especially if you particularly want your label to “disappear” on your lip balm containers. Clear labels will give you that “no label look” or printed-right-on-the-tube look which works in synergy with transparent and frosted lip balm containers, especially if your containers are of visually-stimulating colors and follow a certain color scheme for each lip balm flavor or scent variant. This label stock is also a cheaper option compared to diecut labels (cookie cutter shape labels) since you would simply need to print white and colored ink on areas that need to be conspicuous—the clear, unprinted label material will blend onto the container, taking after the color of its background, leaving you with any custom shape of whatever has been printed.
 

Kraft paper stock is another popular choice with the immediate personality inherent in this material. The warmth of the natural brown color and eco-friendly feel are main visual factors that make this stock a perfect match if you are after a particular brand image. Our kraft stock has more yellow undertones—if you would like this stock for your custom lip balm labels, we recommend requesting for samples or a hard proof to verify that the kraft packaging that you have matches our kraft paper.
 

 This label stock isn’t going to work well with actual lip balm tube labels as this stock is uncoated and this will pose problems with print longevity. Frequent handling and friction inside bags or purses will wear away your kraft lip balm label, making the paper base crumbly as it deteriorates with use. This stock is recommended for external packaging, as in bath and beauty set boxes and bags.
 

White paper stock is our cost-efficient lip balm label option since it is the least expensive material that costs less than plastic labels, but have comparable print quality, strength, and durability needed for simple lip balm packaging applications.
 

While we do have a white matte uncoated stock, if choosing this option, we strongly advise adding a laminate to make the labels hardy against oil, moisture, and frequent handling. If you absolutely need uncoated paper stock, we recommend cleaning your container surfaces thoroughly with alcohol to completely remove traces of your lip balm product to guarantee superior tack.
 

Foil silver stocks (Silver PET and Silver Metalized Paper) and our Holographic silver stock will capture the attention of your customers, especially if your packaging is wanting a more glam look and high fashion appeal. These specialty stocks will make your custom lip balm labels look markedly custom. The foil stocks can be cheaper alternatives to hot or cold foil stamping, if your lip balm labels require metallic-looking prints. Our holographic silver stock has a signature rainbow sheen that is conspicuous enough to capture any beauty market customer’s fancy and can work well with creative concepts to give your lip balm labels more shelf appeal. These label materials come with either gloss or matte laminate to further protect your custom lip balm labels against friction and fading.
 
 
 

CHOOSING LAMINATE FOR LIP BALM LABELS

A laminate is a clear, protective coating that also changes the final finish of your lip balm labels. Once applied, it creates a smoother label texture, and protects the print from wear-and-tear against rubbing or scuffing.
 

CHOOSE MATTE LAMINATE – For a flat, low-shine label finish, with printed colors that are soft and muted. Generally, colors are duller with less contrast. Matte coating is forgiving with low resolution prints and provides for a refined appearance.

CHOOSE GLOSS LAMINATE – Gloss makes your labels extremely smooth and allows them to reflect a lot of light, for high shine. This reproduces vibrant color and delivers sharper detail due to higher contrast (shadows are darker and highlights are brighter). This is great for labels with vibrant color palettes, for a more commercial look. Gloss also provides more protection against ink scuffing compared to matte laminate, especially with paper labels.

CHOOSE HOLOGRAPHIC GLOSS – Same as gloss laminate, but with the addition of a transparent color gradient that is only apparent once the surface catches light at different angles. The transparent rainbow effect transforms old lip balm label artwork into a more eye-catching piece. This kind of laminate doesn’t suit all label designs and concepts. We suggest getting a label sample to check if this will enhance your existing lip balm label artwork.

CUSTOM LABELS WITH FOIL STAMPING (METALLIC EFFECT ON ANY STOCK)

Add more depth, polished detail, and lustrous elegance to your custom lip balm labels with foil stamping. This special process uses pressure to transfer metallic foil onto the surface of your paper label stock.
 

Choose to highlight specific parts of your label artwork, or foil the entire label to get an overall metallic sheen for a high end look. Just make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be foiled cleanly.
 

NOTE: Foil stamping is different from our foil labels. Foil stamping does not utilize metallic-looking inks, rather it uses an extremely thin foil sheet and printing plates to create the metallic imprints.
 

To be able to achieve this, talk to your designer and specify that a new artboard needs to be created. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where foiling should be done, with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black color). Label this artboard “Foil”. CUSTOM LABELS WITH EMBOSSING (RAISED EFFECT ON ANY LABEL STOCK)

Add custom decorative touches for a two-dimensional, premium custom label. A metal die and high pressure are used to create impressions on your label, for depth, texture, and tactile beauty.
 

For a more involved creative concept, embossing as a final touch increases a custom label’s visual premium for prime labels that outshine competition.
 

Use embossing for crisp lettering or prominent logos to highlight important visual elements. Just make sure the lines aren’t too thin as anything under 1pt can’t be embossed cleanly.
 

NOTE: Embossing can be done WITHOUT INK—this is called “Blind Embossing”. This is most commonly done when creating a textured look to the whole label, such as applying patterns and camouflaged borders.
 

To be able to achieve this, talk to your designer and specify that a new artboard needs to be created. This new artboard must indicate all the areas where embossed effect would be, with solid shapes set in 100K (100% Black color). Label this artboard “Emboss”. PAMPER AND PERFECT YOUR LIP BALM PRODUCTS WITH PRO TIPS FOR OPTIMUM LABEL WEAR

No matter how effective your lip balms are, if your custom labels don’t convey the right brand image and fall short on capturing the fancy and attention of your prospective customers, sales may not be as robust as you would like it to be. Here are some quick expert tips for your lip balm labels:

 

DEFINE THE DETAILS.

Comparatively small in size, the lip balm label demands not only a high-performing label material...

 
High definition, crisp designs are crucial so that your label designs develop smaller text and icons. Make sure that your artwork is set to at least 300dpi, with all your text converted into outlines, and fine lines set to at least .57pt or 0.2mm. This guarantees that all the details are crisp and clearly visible. This is important especially for your label footnotes that are set in italics stating your lip balm’s allergy information and supplementary product info. If in doubt about scale, request for a hard proof if this is your first time printing your labels.

 

BEAUTIFUL LIP BALM LABELS SHOULD LOOK GOOD ALL THE TIME.

There are ingredients in your lip balm formulations that might weaken the integrity of your labels over time.

This, and exposure to moisture and friction, will create problems with adhesion and label integrity. You don’t want a label that prematurely deteriorates; this reflects largely on your brand identity with customers. Labels with a plastic base material will do a great job at looking good for longer; that being said paper labels do help your products stay beautiful even in purses and pockets, as long as these are laminated. Also remember to store your unused lip balm labels in a place that is cool and dry, not exposed to sunlight, to keep them looking pretty and in top condition.


 

CREATE OVERLAPS FOR A MORE SECURE FIT.

A problem that is often encountered with lip balm wraparound labels is the issue of “best” label adhesion.

A trick to get around this is to measure the circumference of your lip balm tube or tub and add a slight extension to the total width. This overlap allows your lip balm label to stick to both the small container’s surface and to itself, for a secure fit.


 

CREATE CUSTOM LIP BALM LABELS WITH ADDED FEATURES FOR FORM AND STYLE.

There are many finishing options to make your custom lip balm labels more memorable and user-friendly.

Both style and function can be enhanced with simple tweaks to your existing lip balm label. You can request to have label special fx (embossing, debossing, foiling, spot varnish, etc.) for a more distinct and high end cosmetic look. And since your products are to be used on precious skin, the addition of a label perforation over the cap can be easily done to meet tamperproof requirements.

Get the perfect fit—a tight wrap around the circumference of your container is the only way to secure your lip balm labels permanently. To ensure that your labels are securely wrapped around tubes and pots, consider adding a slight extension to the width of your lip balm labels so that it wraps around (and adheres) to itself. In our label torture tests, the addition of extra sticky adhesive on thinner label material works wonders on keeping your custom labels perfectly positioned so you can rest easy that your lip balms look great for longer.

Please save your custom lip balm label artwork as layered .PDF files so that our Prepress Team can properly check and report any issues to you. We can certainly work with .TIFF, .EPS, .PSD, and .AI files as well, but kindly make sure that you go through our FILE PREPARATION CHECKLIST below:

 

  • Proofread everything for typos and grammatical errors. To keep the integrity of your files, we do not check text.
  • Set all your images, objects, and the file’s color mode to CMYK for digital printing.
  • Add a 3mm bleed to all sides.
  • All raster images recommended 350dpi
  • Minimum line thickness .57pt or 0.2mm
  • We print lip balm labels to any size. Please double check artwork dimensions before sending to save on proofing time.
  • Do not include printer’s crop marks or registration marks in your PDF export.
  • Outline all fonts.
  • If you use a bleed, make sure your file has the correct bleed settings.
