CUSTOM HOLOGRAPHIC LABELS WITH WHITE INK PRINTING

Considerations for artwork setup is important when it comes to custom holographic labels. While these labels have an opaque backing, the holographic foil can interfere with some artwork elements that you might not want to have a rainbow sheen applied. This stock and work with you or against you: it can increase your custom labels’ appeal, or create an overwhelming image, depending on how you setup your artwork.

 

Printing as is, without white ink, will result to a uniform holographic rainbow effect on your whole label design, and labels that will take on the silver “metallic” base material.
 

Make use of this versatile and striking label material and add flexibility to your custom holographic labels by using white ink to enhance print effects to your advantage. To avoid design errors on holographic foil, white ink can be used in four ways:
 

  1. Highlights/Selectively using White Ink Underprinting: Place a layer of white ink underneath specific art elements to increase opacity and cancel out the silver base material color. This will develop the actual ink colors that you want and will highlight important text or images, especially since the signature holographic material is already a design element in itself.

    WHAT YOU GET: Areas with white ink underprinting will take on the color of your choosing, while areas without white ink will take on the appearance of silver. The whole label will uniformly reflect its signature rainbow sheen.

     

  2. Highlights/Selectively using White Ink Underprinting with Colored Ink Overprinting: Place a layer of white ink underneath specific art elements to increase opacity and cancel out the silver base material color. This will develop the actual ink colors that you want. Highlight design elements and create focus by printing over the holographic foil to cancel out the holographic rainbow sheen.

HOLOGRAPHIC VERSUS HOLOGRAMS:

Custom holographic labels are different from holograms, which are 3D images and not 2D repeating patterns.

When creating designs for your holographic labels, consider making the most impact by drawing attention to the most important part of your artwork (Logo? Call-to-action? Offer?) and make these stand out by overprinting the holographic effect to create contrast. You can also reverse this effect by overprinting on all the label areas and keeping the important art elements clean of overprinting so that these areas are the only parts that will show the rainbow sheen.

 

REVITALIZING OLD LABEL ARTWORK:

Sometimes, all it takes is a new canvas.

For any custom labels that need a new canvas to fit a festive occasion, such as a product re-launch, advertising season (coupons for price off or special occasions promos), trade expo, or when you simply want to make your existing designs look more conspicuous and novel, use holographic labels for high-contrast, dynamic custom labels.

 

WITH THIS PARTICULAR STOCK, LESS IS MORE:

Remember that any areas that don’t have overprinting will develop the rainbow holographic gradient.

Since the holographic gradient develops all colors, using too many colors could take away from your design. Remember that your holographic labels already have tons of personality by virtue of material—prioritize what your labels need to accomplish and make sure that your color scheme, along with the holographic patterns, don’t overwhelm your audience. Your text, logo, or images should stand out; having too many colors and using too many design effects can complicate your label design to the point where they are unreadable.

IMPORTANT ARTWORK TIPS

Please save your custom holographic label artwork as layered .PDF files so that our Prepress Team can properly check and report any issues to you. We can certainly work with .TIFF, .EPS, .PSD, and .AI files as well, but kindly make sure that you go through our FILE PREPARATION CHECKLIST below:
 

  • Proofread everything for typos and grammatical errors. To keep the integrity of your files, we do not check text.
  • Set all your images, objects, and the file’s color mode to CMYK for digital printing.
  • Add a 3mm bleed to all sides.
  • All raster images recommended 350dpi
  • Minimum line thickness .57pt or 0.2mm
  • We print holographic labels to any size. Please double check artwork dimensions before sending to save on proofing time.
  • Do not include printer’s crop marks or registration marks in your PDF export.
  • Outline all fonts.
  • If you use a bleed, make sure your file has the correct bleed settings.
